Are you ready! You better be… He’s has everything his Starz Family says he has…and that is “finesse”. He calls himself Finesse Starz and there is no doubt that he has it. After first hearing him, we knew that he had the finesse and the star qualities that Digmi embraces. With a clean cut well coordinated appearance; a cool, calm and collected Finesse Starz says, “music has shaped his life, style, and passion,” this is what drives him as an artist, friend, brother, business man and father. Digmi embraces all those that are chasing their dreams and doing it with their own unique style. Like everyone trying to make it, we go through struggles and Finesse is no different. After struggling to find his place creatively, he began his life as a lyricist, merely as an attempt to woo the ladies. But then realized he created a sense of purpose. He started perfecting his rhyme and flow…crafting his word play until he earned the right to call himself a rapper. Not only do the chicks dig him, but dudes respect his game and ability to get the crowd hype. More importantly DIGMI …digs him.
He’s just a stylish cat that flips his life stories into bars in order to lay down tracks for real people…diggin’ real music. His recently released “Real Fiction,” which sets a standard for his career while he touches on everything from real life struggles to the double life of being a hip hop artist, separating the real from the fake; the music from the business. He speaks of his family life and overcoming disappointment. Confidence isn’t an issue with this man. He tells you the direction of his career and speaks from the heart. Finesse rhymes about first loves and heart aches and then makes the girls….well you know…with his smooth flow in his love ballads. One thing to know about Finesse is that he is real and what you see and hear is what you get, hence “Real Fiction.” This is why Digmi is feelin this cat. Finesse…..welcome to the Digmi.Nation. |
How did you arrive at the name "Finesse Starz" and "Starz, Inc"?
Actually, the name "Finesse" was given to me, cuz people said I had a certain finesse with my words and liked the way I finessed the tracks. My old nickname was Finesse Barz, but I [later] added "Starz" instead. I liked the name and ran wit it. I put the "Starz" on the end, not only cuz it had a nice ring to it but I feel I have that star quality. Starz Inc. was supposed to be a modeling agency I planned to establish, but then me and my business partner/Brotha from anotha motha, H. Deuce (which is also my manager), thought about naming our independent label it. People have the idea that it's named after me, but that's not the case. Starting 5ive Management consist of my fam. I feel, individually, we all hold weight and are Starz where ever we go. My artists are the talk of the town in their hoods…. It's like a credibility reference. To the people that personally know us, we have our own personalities and character that equals a mean swagger! So united, my whole team is just a bunch of Starz... Ya dig?

Tell us more about Starz Inc.
We’re an indie label, but we’re also an entertainment company. We’re into everything. We’re looking for all kids of talent, dancers, singers, rappers, musicians – real instrumental with it. If I can find a hot opera singer and put it to a hot hip hop beat I’ll do it. We all young black entrepreneurs on the grind, we all got legit jobs, doing business with legit money – no funny money involved. We’re moving at a moderate pace but we doing it the right way so I can’t be mad.
Starz Inc is a family, and we support each other. Our R&B artist Chanelle, we took care of her, got her vocal coaching, took care of her studio time, because we believe in her talent, saw her potential. If my dudes didn’t believe in me, they wouldn’t big me up because I’m their friend. If I spit something mediocre they’ll tell me. Any artist that gets down with us, all they have to do is grind, write and perfect their craft…and after the business is done we all chill together, go get dinner or whatever. Most companies say there a family but they really not. We’re really a family. That is why I’m feelin the Digmi family. We are all on the same level.
Is there a constant message you are trying to portray in your music?
Yeah, I'm basically sayin', even tho this is entertainment, don't scream all that keep it real, killer killer, drug shit if you’re really frontin. Just say you’re here to entertain and be yourself. And of course - Starz Inc. Is In Tha F*ckin' Buildin' & We Gettin' Money Maaan!!! |

Starz Inc. Is In Tha F**kin Buildin! |
How do you describe yourself as an artist?
I'm the realest person I know. I'm very creative, versatile and original. I'm an artist/song writer, not only of hip-hop, but R&B also. My aim is to top my best effort. In that way, I'll always discover a new way to f*ck the game up! I want to stay setting trends and going left wit it, but at the same time, make it cool enough that people will acknowledge my style and respect it. I only speak on things I personally experienced or I can closely relate to. When you’re listening' to me, you’re getting 100% me.
Who or what motivates you to continue to make music?
….My son is my overall REASON, period! But my family (Starz Inc.), has alwayz believed in me and so I can't allow myself to slack! Plus this music is in my blood. It feels like second nature to me. I involve music in everything that I do, I grew up on all types of music and for a long time, it has been the only thing that showed me unconditional love in return from the love I show it!
What other fields would like to get involved in?
I would love to get into production, so I can contour a couple of beats to my own personal swagger. I also would like to get into the acting field. I feel I have the personality, charisma and intensity for the big screen. I admire Tupac for his ability to appeal in music as well as in film, equally. I picture myself having a lasting impression like that.
When was Real Fiction released? What’s the relevance of the title “Real Fiction"?
It was released 2005 and the whole relevance of the title is pretty self explanatory. It basically represents what I'm bringing to the industry and what I feel the hip-hop industry consists of. Using myself as an example, I love Hip-Hop and just music on a whole. I will always do this for the love of the culture, but I also feel that there is no better career than one you can make millions while doing something you love to do. No matter how "Real" you are, there still is an entertainment factor to your music. I only respect real, but I don't expect every single thing that is said on a track, to be facts. There will always be an element of fiction there, because that adds entertainment value. That’s what I give to the audience in "Real Fiction". I'm a humble dude speakin' the truth, so people relate to me….
If you pay attention to my titles on "REAL Fiction", you'll see that the title reflects what the song is relating to. For ex. the song titled Half Fiction, is basically glamour and glits, but there is a lot of truth to it too. I am determined to reach that level, but for now it's just Half Fiction. "Real Fiction" is the ultimate oxymoron, because there are so many facts to my fiction. It can or will happen! Bet that!
What's your pet peeve?
I am an over perfectionist. I'm never satisfied and the slightest thing can blow my high. I can have 95% approval, but I still want 100%. This is a gift and a curse, cuz this is why I am the artist I am, and I feel I can only get better and perfect my art. But I drive my people craaazy…
Greatest Accomplishment?
It might be cliché but my greatest accomplishment is the birth of my son. Being there and being a father to my son. My music is right under it. But being a father is up there. There’s nothing more special or important to me than my son. He gives me extra drive in the hip hop game, I don’t want him to ever want. I want him to be a lil’ spoiled rich kid. My determination is in my son. My dudes (Starz Inc) I love em, My dude Duece I love ‘em, that’s my heart that’s my brother, he always backed me before anything, before Starz Inc., even when I wanted to quit, he told me I had too much talent to waste. They’re my drive overall…my real determination is in my son. I can’t fail, I look at him and I know I can’t fail. You don’t realize it until that life is given to you and a lot of people don’t appreciate it and I don’t see how. |

Ok. Let’s switch gears real quick. Where can we listen and purchase the “Real Fiction” album by Finesse Starz?
www.myspace.com/finessestarz is where you can sample my joints and in the meantime you can purchase through www.thedigmination.com.
What is about Digmi that you are feelin?
Digmi is family. That’s how they do. Just like my Starz Inc Team, they have the swagger and finesse. The style and realness is what they are all about. |
Back to your career….what would be your dream collaboration?
I’ll have to resurrect a couple of people. It would be Me, Big and Pac on a album produced by Just Blaze or maybe a Premier track, it gotta be something deep…I love Timbaland and Pharell.. They get busy…but for that collaboration I think it would have to be like a Premier or Just Blaze.
Who would you like to go on Tour with?
Kanye… I dig his style, I like the way he came out. He makes good music and does what’s good for him. He’s a flashy dude, he gets fly, and he gets fresh. He respects music. I love music, once I really perfect my craft I wanna get into producing. I can respect his drive an attitude cuz he put in work to get it. It wasn’t as overnight as people think. When you hungry for so long and you get, you embrace it and that’s what he’s doing… he’s feeling himself but that’s cool, I feel myself sometimes too, (laughs). |

Two words to describe the industry?
Watered Down.
We gotta get back to the essence of hip hop. Fa real. you don’t only have to be so “lyricist lounge" wit it but make real music, People need to respect the game people not even saying real words any more… a whole bunch of nothing, I like to party like everyone else but ‘I don’t even know what u talking about’ Too much weed smoking, because what about the people that don’t do that…you gotta make something for them.
Word to describe self?
Creative.
Favorite phrase and word?
Starz Inc. & Progressive. |
Hated phrase?
‘I can’t.’ There are few things you can’t do. You can manipulate things so that you can almost do it but there’s no real cant.
Goals?
Be established as an artist, get my company on the Map, get a sub-label deal and take hip hop to another plateau. I may be a more commercial artist but I got lyrics, and you wanna dance, I’m gonna give you that too. Look for “Real Fiction” it’s out there. My freestyle album, “Finesse 2 tha best yes”.
